Criteria to be Successful
One must be aware of ethical conflicts in daily life; take ownership of personal codes of conduct and values; be decisive in decision making; firmly take action after making a decision; and have the presence of mind to keep moving forward after ethical dilemmas.
Description
For nearly two years, I have worked at Attitude Dance Boutique in Bryan/College Station. (See my résumé for more details.) Every day, I am faced with ethical dilemmas. It was not until I began working at Attitude, however, that I saw for myself how business ethics are essential to running and working for a successful business.
Because Attitude Dance Boutique is a small, local business, my boss places responsibilities and trust in my coworkers and me to execute tasks that go beyond our Sales Associate description. Some of these duties include pricing inventory, selecting and ordering merchandise, reorganizing and rearranging the sales floor, create spreadsheets, fliers, and other documents, and attend special events. If at any point I were to ignore the morals and values embedded in me, I would not be able to accurately perform these duties. The efficiency and good name of the business would be compromised.
Ethical decision-making must occur in less dramatic ways, too, such as making the decision not to browse Facebook or reading articles while on the clock. Once I make the ethical decision to refrain from distracting activities, I find initiative to begin a new project at the store or to improve a system already in place.
Finally, I have learned much about moving on after conflict. My boss always handles herself with class, respect, and confidence when customers attempt to take advantage of us, when employees are not giving 100%, and even when making the tough decision to dissolve a business partnership and the arduous legal process that followed.
I could not have asked for a better employer or business to begin my work career. The experience I have gained in retailing, merchandising, customer service, and entrepreneurship are invaluable to me. I know I will always be faced with questionable, gray-area conflicts in the workplace and in my daily life, but I am confident in the solid foundation I have developed at Attitude Dance Boutique to make the best decision possible when these situations arise.
